Normas apícolas en México
Because of the Africanized bee, every colony must be requeened at least once a year with a queen of European origin or from genetically selected and improved stock, marked on the thorax in that year's colour (years ending 0/5 blue, 1/6 white, 2/7 yellow, 3/8 red, 4/9 green); rustic hives must be replaced by modern movable-frame hives, and light-coloured protective clothing is required (NOM-002-SAG/GAN-2016, 4.2-4.4, 6.2.2).
In control zones apiaries must stand at least 200 m from populated places and main roads, or the distance set by state law (6.2.1). Beekeepers take part in capturing swarms when local authorities ask, and a captured swarm kept for use must be requeened with a queen from an approved breeder; honey may not be used in the candy for queen cages (4.6-4.7).
Moving populated hives, queens, nucs or other bee material into or within control zones needs a zoosanitary certificate (Certificado Zoosanitario) from SADER or an approved body, with the breeder's current genetic and health certificate for queens and the hives branded (7.1).
Beekeepers must test for varroa in 15% of the hives of each apiary at least every six months; where infestation exceeds 5%, the whole apiary is treated under official supervision, with products registered by SADER (NOM-001-ZOO-1994, 4.1, 7.1, 8.1).
Colonies that are moved or sold must carry the official SINIDA identification discs — a large one on the front and a small one on the back of the brood box — which requires registering your production unit (UPP) in the National Livestock Register (PGN); lost, stolen or damaged discs are reported to SINIDA (NOM-001-SAG/GAN-2015, 4.1-4.3, 6.4.2).
